Profile of a Photographer
Joseph Philbert, Jr. is an independent photographer based in U.S. Virgin Islands, specifically on the island of St Thomas.
Joe was born and raised on the island of St. Thomas. In his youth he was a practitioner of Tae Kwon Do as well as an avid dancer and model. He has been affiliated with the Roses and Champagne Models for more than a decade.
“My experiences with Roses and Champagne introduced me to the industry, provided me with insight into style and fashion, and what the professionals look for. I think this helped me capture the beauty, soul and style in my images regardless of the concept or focus individual, place or thing,” he said. His interest in Photography was realized during a workshop in Florida where on a whim, he took the Photography Seminar. “I’ve always photographed family members and other objects and thought it would be nice to advance my skills. After that, I found myself investing in equipment, practicing, being a shutter bug, and just trying to improve my skills. I continued to take more classes and seminars to learn the trade. This also gave me an opportunity to network with people, clothing designers, dancers, artists, models, and generally have fun.
In July 12 2006 Joe’s whim materialized into Philbert Photos (http://www.philbertphotos.com), his Photography Portfolio.
Intrigued by graphics, he likes photo editing, his version of technical airbrushing. “It’s amazing what technology can do in providing you with the means to assist someone with skin imperfections so one can see their beauty.
Joe exclusively uses professional grade Canon photographic equipment.
Joe’s work includes a cross section of local events that includes: concerts, performances, sports, and weddings. He also enjoys photographing architecture, flora, landscapes, fashion, as well as Caribbean and urban life. His favorite images are of people. He says: “I frequently take portraits, often of strangers, in natural or city settings. Beyond capturing the expressions and gestures, I try to reveal something about the character and personality of the subject. I bring a camera with me everywhere I go.”
Joe’s photographs have appeared in various advertisements and publications including the 2007 VI Fashion Week, and corporate web sites www.vi.gov, www.doe.vi, Recently, his images were included in the Island Wear Magazine, Virgin Voices Magazine , Posh Magazine and St. Thomas Daily Newspaper.
