Taking a cruise can be just what the doctor ordered, rest and relaxation on the high seas. You can choose your destiny, activities, food, and of course drinks. However, you can have an even better time if you follow some simple instructions and suggestions. A list was compiled by a group of travelers who know the art of cruise traveling all to well. Read, Take Note, and Enjoy Your Trip!
1. Remember to carefully study the map of the ship while selecting your cabin, and avoid those cabins that are near gathering places, like the laundry, stairs, and elevators.
2. Book excursions through the cruise ship or with your travel agent. The cruise lines check out the companies they contract with, and you are much safer using one recommended by the cruise line or a company your travel agent is familiar with.
3. When planning your cruise with your trusted travel professional, add an extra day or so to the beginning of your trip in case you experience any flight delays - or worse, cancellations. There is nothing worse than starting your vacation stressed because you have to hurry to make it to the ship. The day or so spent at a hotel near the cruise port will be well worth the added cost.
4. If you're planning a Caribbean cruise from June through November you should know that you will be cruising during hurricane season. Why would you choose to cruise during hurricane season? Price is one reason. Typically your best deals are during the fall months from late August to mid December. Buy insurance, whether through the cruise line or an independent provider - and make sure that the policy covers disruption in case of weather-related events. If the cruise is actually canceled, you will get a refund.
5. Be prepared if your suffer from motion sickness. Most people think the higher up you go the better but a ship is like a tree. When the wind blows and the tree is moving, where is the most motion? - at the top of the tree. The lower part of the tree is hardly moving at all. Keep that in mind when picking your room.
6. Time in port may not be ling enough for you. The duration at several ports of call are merely hours: 6 hours shortest, 8 hours longest. Not long enough to see anything UNLESS you splurge on the expensive tours. Traveller beware - check the time in port carefully!
7. When going on a cruise, make sure to take a power strip with you, because most cabins only have one outlet. This way you will have extra outlets for your hair dryer, cell phone charger, electric razor, curling iron, etc.
